Learning Reflection #1
Last week’s lecture was based on Leaders & Followers and Policy Cycle &
Instruments. What really made me think was when we were asked to define leadership.
The main point I got out was that leadership is the process, not the outcome. This
means that someone can have exceptional leadership skills yet still fail. Anyone can
learn how to be a good leader by practicing certain methods to help them become
better. Personally, I do consider myself a good leader due to the following reasons: in
any team related project, I always start by delegating tasks to everyone including myself
that best fits each individuals strengths. I like to motivate others to do well as everyone
depends on each other. Since communication is key in any team project, I always try to
conduct robust dialogues so that everyone has a chance to input their ideas and
opinions. Leadership also directs towards having followers or subordinates. Where
followers are loyal to the goal and not the individual who is leading, whereas
subordinates are loyal to hierarchy in their jobs. This really sets apart followers from
subordinates based on what they believe in. One can be both or neither. It all depends
on what the individual actually cares for. In the workplace, I’ve seen many times where
my coworkers are doing their job because they have to (subordinates) and they get paid
for and half the time they don’t stop complaining about how much they hate their job.
I’ve also seen individuals who are so passionate about a topic that they will do anything
to keep their belief high. In my opinion, there is no right type of leader or leadership
skills. Everyone’s different in their own perspectives and I think it is fair.
