Fear- response to real and present danger: fight or flight , fear helps organize our response. Classification of anxiety orders emerged as distinct group of disorders in dsm- iii. Rise of interest in anxiety asylums primarily housed psychotic inds anxiety didn"t fit into asylums. Freud"s emphasis on neuroses- recall client base"s problems (obsessions, worries, moods) Characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks- similar to a heart attack. Usually occurs without warning and finishes w/in ten minutes: preponderance of physical symptoms: palpitations, pounding heart, sweating, trembling, shaking, derealisation (unreality) or depersonalization (detachment from oneself) Extreme fear about situations where escape is very difficult or embarrassing. Unlike other phobias, its not about being close to another object but distance from. Persistent, excessive, narrowly defined fears associated w/ specific object or situation. Must always occur when exposed to source. Leads to avoidance/ severe discomfort if forced to face it. How does social phobia differ from specific phobia: focused on performance or interpersonal interactions.
