Helps organize responses to threat, like fight or flight. Fear is good; helpful because when you have that sensation of fear your body and mind reacts. Isn"t about real and existing threats in the moment; about worrying about things that may happen in the future. Usually physiological changes e. g. , increased heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, pupils dilating, etc. Difficult to control thoughts in state of anxiety -- it can be hard to grab hold of your thoughts. Halo effect; emotional sensation that comes around you and is so profound it influences in the moment and how you feel about the past and/or future. Thus if someone experiences anxiety it"ll influence how they see the future. People get anxious about their exams; thus makes them study. However when anxiety becomes prominent in your life and it lessens the positive benefit. Too much anxiety without exceptional reasons ceases to have positive benefit. Emerged as distinct group of disorders in dsm- iii.
