Lecture 11: in search of good mental health. Over last 100 years, population diagnosed with mental illness has increased considerably, rates of disability owing to mental illness have climbed, number of disorders has increased 4x, and people report more distress. Depression may be the leading cause of disability across the world. We have more categories of illness that we didn"t have in the past. People are more likely to self report now. We have lots of treatment, increased accessibility but the rate is not decreasing. Typical efforts to improve mental health reflect broader ideological tendencies toward individualization and personal responsibility. Living in a period where as individuals we are responsible for solving our own problems. Frames these issues as a matter of choice. Look at rise of cbt - says that you have flaws in the way that you think and you need to develop better ways to think. Mindfulness, yoga, go for a run", dietary changes.
