We face a conundrum: rates of mental illness appearing to be increasing, alongside psychiatric disability. Even if rates of mental health problems were going up, disability rates would go down. At the same time our ability to understand the problems that humanity faces are increasingly explained and understood within the realm of psy-knowledge. Typical efforts to improve mental health reflect broader ideological tendencies toward individualization and personal responsibility. Personal responsibility - suffering and distress are individual problems and our own problem to solve. Public education to recognize the signs of mental disorder and seek treatment. The person has to change and the fundamental problem. Professional solutions - research to "find cures" new treatments. Relationship between mental health problems and competitive pressures (poverty, inconvenient children", post secondary students) Part of city problems are born out of this broader line. Dt hamilton are not only the ones with mental health but social problems.
