HTHSCI 1DT3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Sept, Chemokine, Interleukin 10
Document Summary
Antibodies to serotype 1a cannot protect against serotype 1b. Double inhaled steroid therapy is ineffective and cause significant side effects. Understanding pathogenesis of asthma exacerbations: human experimental rv infection models, giving asthmatics and healthy a cold and compare their mucosal lining fluid (mlf) sample and clinical responses, associations between immunological responses and disease. Human models: naturally occurring asthma exacerbations, asthmatics have more severe lower respiratory tract (lrt) illness (asthma exacerbations) with rv infections. Atopic asthmatics were recruited along with their atopic normal spouse (act as a control because they should have the same diet and environment) Sample nasopharyngeal aspirates (na) every 2 weeks and keep a peak flow (pef) diary for a period of 3 months. Found that response to infection is different in asthmatic and normal. In asthmatics, lrt symptoms more severe & prolonged; fall in pef more severe: there is a synergistic interaction between allergen sensitisation & exposure & virus infection.
