HTHSCI 1H06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Cell Membrane, Nibble, Ultimate Tensile Strength
Document Summary
Thyroid gland: r/l lobe joined together by isthmus. Follicles, and in the center of these there are colloids, where thyroid hormone is released into the bloodstream. Th has effects on every cell of the body, so it has to have a good blood supply. Don"t worry about arteries: just know it has a good venous drainage, illustrating the hormone goes into circulation and out to body tissues. Vagus nerve: innervates viscera in thoracic cage and pelvic cavity. Goes out to cells in the body and tells it to utilize energy, make atp and break it down to produce heat. Sebaceous glands to secrete oils (hair) and hard nails. 1. increases bmr (utilize fuel, consume o 2 , generate heat) Improves neuroconduction and inc. atp utilized byproduct is heat. Known as the calorigenic effect (hyperthermia w hyperthyroidism) Stimulates breakdown of glycogen (glycogenolysis)and fats (lipolysis) for atp production. Essential for mental development and cognitive skills.
