Document Summary
Gene expression is a very complex process in eukaryotes and there are several different ways to regulate expression: pretty cat gene expression: colour for cats coat on x. Also differences in gene expression at different life stages (growth hormone: most of our cells contain the same genes but only certain genes are transcribed in the cells of each type of tissue. It is advantageous to both prokaryotes and eukaryotes to regulate activity of their genes. Inducers remove the repressor: inducers are small molecules, usually a nutrient, that bind to the repressor, changing its conformation and making it unable to bind to the operator, falls off dna. Inducible means it"s able to be upregulated or made more of: once the inducer inactivates the repressor, rna polymerase can bind, open dna, and transcription can proceed. Idea: some genes are expressed at a low level all the time b/c we need them, some can be induced to be expressed if they"re needed.
