Document Summary

Pregnant women and children should not drink alcohol. Ethanol is metabolized mainly by the alcohol dehydrogenase (adh) enzyme in the cytosol of the liver. Toxic acetaldehyde is the product of alcohol metabolism. Turns into non-toxic acetate which can be used by muscle and other tissues as fuel (converted into acetyl coa) Adh and aldh both produce nadh filling up the buckets" leaving no empty buckets. The microsomal ethanol oxidizing system is part of the cytochrome p450 system of enzymes. These enzymes are embedded in the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum. They are inducible (ability to make more of them) when higher levels of alcohol is consumed. Free radicals are generated and it can interfere with drug metabolism. Drink and take a drug meos is metabolizing alcohol instead of drugs builds up in the bloodstream. Cycle: more you drink, the more p450 (meos"s) are made (or used), the more ros are made.
