HTHSCI 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Adenylyl Cyclase, Beta-Adrenergic Agonist, Antileukotriene
Document Summary
Bronchioles contain smooth muscle that responds to input from the ans. Sympathetic input stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and increases lumen diameter. Increased levels of inflammation and immune cells. Can lead to airway remodeling eventually this is why it needs to be under control. Bronchioles narrow easily in response to stimuli such as cold air, exercise, chemical mediators. People who don"t have asthma will react to this. People with asthma have a severe reaction. Aspirin and ibuprofen inhibit cox therefore arachidonic acid is converted to leukotrienes and then that exhibits exacerbative effects on the lungs. Beta-blockers (non-selective) can cause bronchoconstriction as well. Reduce need of short acting beta agonists (less than 2 per week) Prevent recurrent exacerbations and need for emergency department or hospital care. Prevent reduced lung growth in children and loss of lung function in adults. Optimization of pharmacotherapy with minimizing any adverse effects. Adrenal insufficiency isn"t as big of an issue with glucocorticoids.
