Food security: state that exists when all people, at all times, have physical & economic access to sufficient, safe, & nutritious food to meet their dietary needs & food preferences for active & healthy life. Household food security: focuses on households financial ability to access adequate food. National surveys - questions used to assess food insecurity on canadian population health surveys have been altered from one survey to the next. Cchs sampled individuals of all ages living in private dwellings in 10 provinces, excluding full time members of can forces & individuals living in territories, on 1st nations reserves, or some remote areas. 1. 1 million households (9. 2%) were found to be food insecure at some point in the previous year because of income related barriers to food access. 2. 7 million canadians lived in food insecure households in 2003. Parents compromise their own food intakes to minimize constraints on their children"s food intakes.
