These competitive effects can be observed in children when there is no explicit reward for completion (ex. winding a fishing rod with string, faster when other children were present) Hypothesized that mere presence of others is important in performance of actor (individual in question) Co-actors are individuals performing the same task with the actor. Audience is group of people observing the performance of the task. Social facilitation increased performance increases in the presence of co-actors or an audience. A complication sometimes, the presence of others does not enhance and can even hinder the performance on some tasks. It is important to consider that the presence of others increases arousal. How this heightened arousal affects your performance depends on the specific task. For simple tasks, in which you are expert/well-practiced, performance is enhanced.
