Autoimmune disorder that attacks the myelin of the nerves in the cns. Interrupts and slows down input and output of nerve signals. Caucasian, 1 in 1000 people, females 3x more likely. Cause unknown, linked to sunlight: genetic predisposition. More seizures, brain stem and cerebral symptoms. Treatments: goals: treat prevent and relieve symptoms, cortical steroid treatment reduce inflammation in brain and spinal cord, do not benefit in long term, prevention: injectable medication, ot, pt, counselling. Consider: fatigue, uhthoff phenomenon: temporary worsening of symptoms due to overheating, seizures more likely in children. Give instructions in short sentences with as few words as possible. Varying degrees of paralysis often in lower limbs. Sac of fluid protrudes out of babies back. Meninges protrude with damaged or missing vertebrae. Sac of csf and blood vessels surround protruding spinal cord. Loss of feeling and control in legs.
