Trauma and transformation: period known as total war, all resources a country has is devoted to winning the war, puts people under strain, war measures act. Give the government itself power to run the war, suspends typical rules of governing, allows government to rule by decree (arbitrarily) Don"t want to announce to the enemy everything your doing. Now the government mobilizes economy to produce stuff for the army (steel for guns, ammunition etc. garment industry makes army boots and uniforms, food industry starts feeding soldiers) coordinated by gov. Your workplace and conditions now controlled by employer and government. Interns suspected radicals and people from enemy countries (internment camps: war fever. Outbreaks of crowds supporting soldiers, signing up for military, confident they are going to rush to victory. Both sides threw all of the resources they had to win the war, more men died, more resources mobilized: win-the-war sentiment.
