LIFESCI 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Basal Ganglia, Midbrain, Prefrontal Cortex
Document Summary
Like driving a car, motions you are not consciously aware of most of the time. Damage to this area causes parkinson"s and huntington"s disease type symptoms. Symptoms include: weakness, tremors, rigidity of the limbs, poor balance, and difficulty in initiating movements. Story of hm showing the role of the hippocampus. Hm had generalized seizures for several years which could not be controlled by medication. So they did a bilateral temporal love resection which controlled the seizures completely. Following the surgery hm was unable to make new memories or learn anything new, this is called anterograde amnesia (antero means after and retro means before). Life sci 2c03 page 1 was normal about him. He knew something was wrong with him. He didn"t have total loss of memory, but significant impairments were shown. Since the entire hippocampus was not removed, he could still do simple tasks. Retrograde memory is less effected with old memories being preserved.
