Difference between progenitor and stem cells is progenitor can divide only a limited number of times, whereas stem cells keep doing it. Intermediate cell is called a precursor or progenitor cell, progenitor cells in fetal or adult tissues are partly differentiated cells that give rise to differentiated cells. Progenitor cells are unipotent, stem cells are pluripotent or totipotent. Progenitor cannot self renew, but stem cells can (multipotent or unipotent)
