Words behave in a way that other elements of the mental grammar don"t because words are free. Words are free because they can appear in isolation alone. In ordinary conversation we don"t usually utter just a single word however, there are plenty of causes were a single is acceptable. Each of the single words is perfectly acceptable standing in isolation as an answer to a question. I love to eat soup in the fall. The word soup can appear as the first word, middle or last word in the sentence.
