MEDRADSC 2D03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Iliac Fossa, Diverticular Disease, Pelvic Cavity
Document Summary
Rectum (15 cm long); s3 to distal coccyx. Image: pathology demonstrated is diverticular disease that has been left untreated. All but ascending & descending colon & portion of duodenum are in the peritoneal cavity. General order of pelvic structures (anterior to posterior) Bladder & ureters are similar in both male & female. Run downward on the lateral wall of the pelvic cavity, along the anterior border of the greater sciatic notch. Triangular - apex above symphysis, base towards rectum. Internal os: found at bottom of uterus before it becomes the cervix. Fundas: most superior aspect; approx level = top of empty bladder (non-pregnant) or xiphoid (pregnant) Cervix: most inferior aspect projects into vagina at 90 degrees. Bright part is the endometrium & is surrounded by the thick myometrium. Usually slightly to the left, above & behind the bladder, anterior to rectum & rectouterine pouch, below pelvic brim; normal for fluid to collect here.
