Anatomy & physiology 3: brain is a soft spongy mass of tissue, protected by, skull bones, meninges (superficial to deep, dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater, cerebrospinal fluid (csf, flows between meninges and through ventricles (spaces) in the brain, cushion and shock absorber, contains nutrients, blood brain barrier, capillary filtering mechanism that allows blood to be carried to the brain and spinal cord, but prohibits the entry of certain substances, glial cells: surround nerve cells in the brain and hold them in place, 80 % of cns tumours involve the brain, 20% involve spinal cord.
