Also the option to provide research & teaching. If donor is giving their lungs & they find cancer in them, the lungs would go to research instead. During the waiting process - matching blood & tissue types, determination of whether patient can donate based on the apnea tests. In order to become a donor, a patient must meet the gift criteria. Grave prognosis: end of life, death is near - low on the gcs (ie 3) Family: initiated the discussion of donation, withdrawal of any life sustaining treatments & looking at donation. Therapy that is limited: limited therapy to assist patient in getting better. Requires specific testing to confirm no brainstem function - say that the brain has had injury & is experiencing death.
