Digital society of contemporary life - cellphone, laptop etc. Technologies (digital media, information, communication technologies) are a key feature. Things we do with technology that shape our behaviours - eg. online dating, workplace, politics, culture. Electronic highway - people linked by media content. 2011: access to internet is a human right. Internet is central to digital society + culture. Assumes that access to internet solves other human rights issues. Digital literacy is necessary for full participation. Combo of diverse media (electronic) into communicative object or experience. Provides commentaries about world, see world in new ways . Communicates a message about an observation about the world, as well as observation) observations that are conceptual (requires interpretation of viewer) Mcluhan: how something is represented affects how we understand it. Different technologies have different capabilities that contribute to the message. Eg. video art, which was in response to the commercialization of television (which catered mostly to advertisers)
