Document Summary

Lecture series 5: pharmacology of the respiratory & Contain smooth muscle that responds to inputs from ans. Sympathetic input stimulates beta2- adrenergic receptors, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle and increased lumen diameter, bronchodilation. Glucocorticoids thro ugh inhaled route, minimizing adverse effects. Bronchioles narrow easily in response to stimuli such as cold air, exercise, chemical mediators (environmental stimuli) iclicker: the following graph illustrates the % fall in fev 1 of 4 patients. A- severe asthma, hyper response to small exposure. Atopic: general overreactions to environmental stimuli leading to symptoms of asthma. Cyclooxygenase is being inhibited when aspirin is used. Aka conversing to prostaglandins doesn"t occur which means inflammation aint there. Arachidonic acid pathway turning into leukotrienes which are involved with bronchoconstriction. Reduce intensity and frequency of asthma symptoms. Reduce symptoms of asthma (cough, chest tightness, wheezing, sob) Reduce need ( <2 days per week ) for short acting beta agonists. Reduce the risk of adverse effects associated with asthma.
