1st written string quartet at age 20, eventually writes 14 string quartets. Second most, is next to beethoven in string quartets. Outputs include symphonies (9, same as beethoven), operas, oratorios, chamber music, songs. Brahms, beethoven, schubert ( who also wrote string quartets, symphonies) 1874 competition which he wins a stipend from the austrian government, and wins again in 1876 and 1877. As a result of brahms being part of the committee, he becomes acquainted with him, and helped him obtain more publishers and audiences. His musical roots helped him find publishers and audiences. Visited london 9 times ( where he wrote his 7th symphony) Came to us as director of (now defunct) conservatory of music. He had a salary of 15 000 annually, in a well ranked role. Was open to african-americans and those with disabilities. Dvorak served as its director from 1892-1895. Helped establish american sound, distinct from europe.
