Introduction: the fantastic symphony (symphonie fantastique) performing repertory. Had its premiere in 1830 and is now a part of the standard. An example of program music, the symphony tells a story. Berlioz distributed a printed program explaining the story to the first audience: the fantastic symphony (cont. ) The narrative is characteristically romantic in centering on a creative artist, interiority, the supernatural, and romantic love. Considered avant-garde at the time and today remains shockingly modern, particularly in its treatment of sound.
