The same cue can function in a number of these ways at the same time: To generate emotion (this is intentionally the first on the list. Cuz music is associated with emotion and this is deeply rooted in our culture). Over the centuries, music has developed a ton of associations. Some people talk about music being a language. How various moments are associated with particular emotional responses. In particular, film music is dependent upon 19th century orchestral music. And some of these pop music, some of these associations are not used as extensively as older music. Interesting to note the role film music has kept these associations alive. Can be character of scene, or emotion that filmmakers want audience to feel. This can be an imp way by which filmmaker can get you, the viewer, to empathize. This is one of the reasons why music is so pervasive in films cuz it draws out our emotions.
