Blood products given by transfusion m ust be matched with the recipient"s blood type prior to initiating the transfusion. Incom patible blood types can cause a serious adverse reaction. Blood is introduced slowly by gravity flow directly into the veins, using iv infusion, so that m edical personnel can observe the patient for signs of adverse reactions. People who have received m any transfusions m ay develop an im mune response to some factors in foreign blood cells: this im m une reaction m ust be checked before giving new blood. Infectious diseases m ay also be transm itted through donated blood. Hom ologous transfusions are transfusions using the stored blood products of donors. Blood is stored in a refrigerated environment: rapid transfusion of cold blood may lead to dysrhythmias and a core temperature, som etimes a blood warm er m achine is used.
