NURSING 3X04 Chapter Notes - Chapter 29: Sepsis, Prescription Drug, Blood Bank
Document Summary
Transfusion therapy or blood replacement is the intravenous administration of whole blood, its components, or a plasma-derived product for therapeutic purposes. Restore intravascular volume with whole blood or albumin, oxygen-carrying capacity of blood with. Compatibility of the donor to patient is essential. Human related errors; (improper labelling, poor hand-off between nurses or person transporting the blood, or the method used to complete a blood requisition) may lead to incompatible transfusion. Autologous transfusion (auto transfusion) is when a patient"s blood is collected and then reinfused for volume replacement. Ideal for preoperative blood donation, intraoperative cell salvage, and post-op blood salvage. Patients donate their blood 4-6 weeks before therapy via phlebotomy (performed weekly). Blood is stored at 1 - 6 degrees for 35-42 days and in a controlled environment to decrease adverse events. Since blood is considered a living tissue it must remain healthy before transfusion. Citrate-phosphate-dextrose (cpd) and citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine (cpda-1) are two common preservatives.
