Criminal law in canada says that these are the more specific factors that the state should look at when picking a sanctions. Overlapping uses of each of these purposes. When we talk about crime: being soft on crime or being tough on crime: tough: retribution, seeks to punish, soft: rehabilitation and restorative. We have to understand the purposes of the criminal justice system and how they can come into conflict with each other: competing values, competing models at play in the system. How it is intended to operate depends on the model and purpose of the system: there are 4. Some overlap between them and our current system. We can have competing models and beliefs play out in our politics.
