The exercise was meant to show that strategic thinking is expansive and complicated. It is a relatively recent concept, meaning different things to different people - commerce would think of it differently to the public service. It is more than strategic planning, but it is inherently goal oriented. Strategic thinking is a broader context than achieving goals - tying the vision of what the direction of the organization is with the pursuit of the goals being pursued. It is about innovation, a forward looking exercise based on where we are at. Think about ways to get to different places in the future. It incorporates not only planning but strategies, missions and visions for an organization. The shape of the future can be predicted.
