* you"ll always elect the candidate that tells you what you want to hear, never what you. Always goes back to its greek roots. Democracy is historically, institutionally and culturally varied. Citizens (not professional politicians) directly make the rules and regulations governing society. The historical reality of direct democracy here was less-than-democratic for anyone other than male citizens. It wasn"t perfect (doesn"t mean it would be like that everywhere. Ancient greek theorists were almost all hostile to the direct democracy of the athenians. Putting the power in hands of people whom are uneducated (does that mean we"re going belittling those who are not educated or assuming they"re not qualified?) A petition is signed to attempt to bring about a public vote on proposed statute (exists in british columbia). If enough signatures take place on the petition, they redo" and bring up another election. The government is controlled through elections and political officials. ex: the united states.
