Democracy comes from the greeks word demo (people) and kratos (rules) Political reality: democracy is historically, institutionally and culturally varied. Democracy is almost universally celebrated as the ideal model for organizing political life in the modern era. Democracy comes from the greek demos (people) and kratos (rule) But the lived reality of democracy is historically, institutionally, and culturally varied. In this lecture we will focus on two forms: direct democracy and indirect. Democracy examine their justifications and explore their particular institutional structures. Direct = power is in the hands of people. A participatory form of democracy - participation of the people. A political system where there are no specialized distinctions between governors and governed. Citizens are directly involved in governing themselves directly involved in debating and determining public laws, rules, and regulations (rather than electing someone else to make these decisions) All male adult citizens were able to participate participation to a far greater extent than today.
