Early capitalism: speculative, traditional, spiritual and religious, pirates, family- oriented (especially in ruling). To get to modern capitalism, we have to get past the power of religion and the priestly class. The introduction of rules and rule-bound modes of organization. The more that we have structures, the more ventures get predictable. We need secure rules to bound the economic process. As people got more interested in extending economic reach, they need predictability. We need people to ensure that when contracts are made they are enforced. Rules are introduced to stabilize the economic process. This process, as it picks up speed, is the world we live in today. The problem with disenchantment: enchantment and religion organized the world. We change at the level of values, and only when we do this does our strategic rationality begin to shift. You pick the strategy, you re stuck with the goal. Protestantism does this: it introduces a change of lifestyle.
