POLSCI 3J03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Party System, Westminster System

18 views2 pages

Document Summary

Last class talked about the party system in canada. Up until 20 years ago, the public opinion was around the mid-point or slightly right in canada, compared to the united states. The two main parties, the liberals and the progressive. Over the last 20 years, this has changed. The conservative population tended to move more right and the liberal/progressive population moved more to the left. What was a large mode in the middle shifted to either side, leaving a gap in the middle. Strangely enough, we have been more progressive in the last 20 years with the two sides shifting closer to their side and moving away from the middle. Canada today is viewed as a bilateral party system with a higher portion situated in the left. This has been put down to the failings of the electoral system and a favoring over concentrated votes rather than regional spread.
