How do adaptations arise: they emerge in development as a result of activation of relevant genes in interaction with relevant aspects of the environment. 3 essential components to their insight: natural selection: the differential survival and reproduction of organisms as a result of heritable differences between them, formalized by charles darwin and alfred russel wallace, 3 essential components: Favourable heritable traits are selectively transmitted across generations. Favourable heritable traits help offspring to survive in the wild so that they may too reproduce and so forth . Selection against any sort of departure from the species-typical adaptive design: keeps traits stable over generations. Darwin"s finches: display natural selection, observed in the galapagos. Food was scarce; all small seeds were eaten first.
