Criteria of abnormality: symptoms indicative of psychopathology, 2 main criteria to determine presence of absence in dsm 5, impairment criterion: symptoms impair social, occupational, or other domains of functioning. Shyness, lacking initiative, stingy, generous: some are chosen to be pathological and some aren"t - inconsistency. Parents get treatment but the disorder is for the child. Sociocultural model: abnormality result from social pressures poverty, unemployment, etc. Individual not the problem its caused by their conditions and environmental in which they live: ex. Poverty, joblessness, poor marital status: higher rates of mental disorder at low socioeconomic levels. History of dsm (diagnostic and statistical manual of american psychiatric society): 1968: dsm-ii: reduced psychodynamic bias, neuroses vs psychoses freud, 182 categories in 134 pages, made less freudian. 1980: dsm-iii: atheoretical no psychodynamic bias, more compatible with icd, 265 categories in 494 pages - another large increase, strip theoretical bias of freud more objective.
