However, you are constantly categorizing your experiences to guide your decision making. For example, you wake up in the morning, and your head is throbbing due to celebration activities from the previous evening. By placing your current situation into the category of a hangover" for which you have experienced before, you conclude that your current condition is best treated with aspirin, plenty of water, and quiet. Why categorize: psychologists have de ned four basic functions of categorization, first, classi cation allows you to treat objects that appear differently as belonging together. Imagine how much slower it would be if you had to fully describe the meaning of everything you were saying in a conversation.
