PSYCH 1X03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Hinder, Social Facilitation, Behaviorism
Document Summary
Common sense does not always equal research findings. This occurs even when there is no reward. (children winded a string faster in groups than individually) Audience: a group of people watching an individual perform a task. Social facilitation: the increased performance that occurs in the presence of co-actors or an audience. The presence of others can sometimes hinder, rather than help, a performance. Zajonc"s research stated that the important factor to consider is that presence of others increases your arousal. How this heightened arousal affects your performance depends on the specific task to be performed. For simple tasks for which you are an expert, performance is enhanced. For complex tasks, for which you are neither expert nor well practiced, performance is hindered. Social learning theory: we learn appropriate behaviours by modeling and imitating the behaviour of others. Can help you to understand how a complex cognitive skill such as language is acquired in children through explicit reinforcement.
