Influence of others has broad implications on topics from cultural norms to advertising: social psych research interesting because what might seem obvious not necessarily so, many counterintuitive findings. Audience: a group of people watching an individual perform a task. Ex: imagine about to go on stage for performance. Presence of crowd will cause you to feel some anxiety & nervous energy. If have been preparing for weeks, can use crowd"s energy to put on next level performance. If underprepared & lack confidence, pressure of audience may make you perform below normal level. What would happen if was: follow up to bandura"s study, children still attacked real person (kicks, punches) Conformity: after only okay performance, crowd applauds and you politely applaud with them, applause continues & you do too, people start to stand up and think this is crazy but still stand up. = power of conformity: muzafer sherif (1930s) conducted series of conformity experiments using perceptual illusion called autokinetic effect.
