Uses top-down processing: strawberries aren"t red. Influence of shadows: remove shadow colour (blue) and perceive white. Driven by prior expectations of a red octagon. Angles and shadow influence the perceived face. Big things/event = attribute big causes to them. Assumptions: a) he fully recovers, b) he dies from his injuries. Faces: a special form of pattern recognition. We recognize faces because they are important to us. Innate preferences: recall: babies would prefer to look at left image of perceived face. Interpret vague stimulus as something familiar to observer. We want to see faces where there are none. Idea that we process a face as a whole. Idea that we view each individual part of the face as components: hypothetical based question, people take the same amount of time to identify faces that are inverted or upright. Unable to ignore bottom half of face.
