Being selish does not always mean that it will lead to beter itness. Honey bees do not reproduce themselves and only let the queen reproduce. Ground squirrels give alarm calls to warn others that there is a predator in the area, which increases the chance of it being seen by the predator but gives others a chance to escape. Increasing the itness of others can someimes improve one"s own itness. Adaptaions are not for the good of the group but for the good of the gene. Most of what appears to be for the good of the group are actually cooperaion interacions. Good of the group is only a side efect of acts that favour the good of the individual. Geese search for food in locks instead of individually even though the misconcepion is that inding food in groups means that there is so much more food to ind.
