Labeling theory: application of a deviant label to an individual can result in changes of self-perception and perception by others, and a decrease in social opportunities. Mental illness stereotypes are learned during socialization and are reinforced into rigid stereotypes. Health professionals are subject to the effect of labeling and stereotyping: sane patients faked symptoms to be admitted into psychiatric care behaviours returned to normal dehumanized, hospital staff continue to interpret their behaviours as abnormal.
