Bowlby and ainsworth are the two biggest researchers in this field. Freudian perspective got replaced with a behavioral perspective. Attachment occurs through satisfaction of hunger; baby has primary drive called hunger and food is a primary reinforcer; mom brings food thus she becomes the secondary reinforcement. Discovered they spent all their time with the plush mom. Video of harlows research: monkeys like what is more comforting vs. ability to give food, calls this contact comfort; later called syncroning, this debunked learning theory, debunking learning theory is what this is called. Applying harlow to humans: unresponsive mom vs. responsive dads (schaffer and emerson, 1964) Baby gets more responsive to the dad despite who gives food. Importance of being able to recognize difference between mom and others.
