Fast mapping: fast mapping children"s ability to connect new words to their meanings so rapidly that they cannot be considering all possible meanings for the new word. If happening so quickly, how to infants know what the word is referring to: point at bunny and say bunny. How does the infant know if it means the animal, the fur, etc: social cues. Joint attention parents encourage word learning by carefully watching what interests their children: parents" gaze and posture is a cue to pay attention, referential behaviour. If they can do it well, they tend to have larger vocabularies. Encouraging word learning: questioning forces children to identify meanings of new words and practise saying them, ex. Arthur is drawing. what is arthur doing? drawing. : children learn words when exposed to a parent"s advanced vocabulary, children who read frequently tend to have a larger vocabulary.
