PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Serotonin Transporter, Behavioural Genetics, Phenotype
Document Summary
Week 2: biological vs environmental contributions to development: Nature nurture debate: used to be one versus the other. Basic concepts: but now we know that almost everything is a bit of both, genes and environment work together and effect on another. Mom has depression when pregnant, appears in child"s genotype which they can then pass it down to their children. Acquired characteristics can be passed down: genotype and phenotype. Phenotype-the way the gene is displayed (what you see) (how the gene is expressed) how it actually shows. Genes can code for something and the environment can change. The way genes are expressed is a product of the environment. Researchers looked at people who had genes coding for more serotonin and less serotonin. Also looked at stressful life events (both positive and negative) Over 20 years they follow people and see who got depressed.
