PSYCH 2AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Short-Term Memory, Long-Term Memory, Information Processing
Document Summary
Overview: the information processing model, information processing in infants, information processing in older children. Information processing in infants: difficult to study, memory may be present at birth, but weak. Have to remember that the stimuli is old to become habituated and new to become dishabituated. Stroked their foreheads and put sugar water on their lips. After several trials they would stroke the forehead and the baby would start sucking. Learned that if they got their forehead rubbed, they would get something yummy: showed babies had enough memory to learn this simple behaviour relationship. Have to be able to remember the response and the award: memory improves with age. Some babies were trained that if they kicked their legs, the mobile would move. 2 months olds can remember it for 2 days, 3 months old 1 week, 6 months olds 3 weeks. To extend the length of time the memory survived.
