Symptoms cause clinically signi cant impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning. Symptoms not better explained by intellectual disability, or global development delay. Failure to initiate or respond to social interactions. Lack of facial expression and nonverbal communication. Adverse response to speci c sounds, textures, etc. Prone to anxiety, depression (adolescents or adults) Diagnosis of autism has gone up dramatically in the last 25 years or so. Perhaps 6 or 8 years ago, a good estimate of the prevalence was about 0. 3%, and now it is approximately 1% -- three times what it was those years ago. 4-5 times more common in boys than girls. Highest male/female ratio in normal range of cognitive function. Lowest male/female ratio in extreme low range of cognitive function. 70% of individuals with asd comorbid for at least one other disorder; 40% with two or more. 33% = problems with gait or balance. Sort faces by physical features not emotions.
