Gorr and matthews argue for 6 fundamental debates or dichotomies: nomothetic vs idiographic, person vs situational determinants of behaviour, conscious vs unconscious, brain function vs learning, genes vs. environment, change vs stability. Personality vs other fields: more global and general, personal more general and ambitious. Long history of interest: one of not the oldest of theorizing in psychology, many large-scale theories.
