Theory development & testing: little empirical support, theories are , postdictive not good at predicting what will happen (non predictive), asking why something happened after it happened, vague not easily measurable, abstract concepts. What is personality: whatever makes for the consistency in our behavior, personality is a made up hypothetical construct, not a real thing, whatever is responsible for individual differences in behavior. Invented to help us understand there"s consistent patterns of behaviors, thoughts, and emotions in ourselves and others, we can predict in many cases how people will react to something: explain behavior patterns. Internal psychic structures applies to the mind, mental structures: part is unconscious and not known to us, trying to determine what is going on at an unconscious level. Influence by experience and environment: how does one go from who they are at 2yrs to who they become at 40yrs old, behaviorist approach: 2: personality = consistent patterns of behavior, emphasized experience and learning.
