Document Summary
Chapter 17: what you know about you: the self textbook notes. The self can have two different meanings (i and me) Me/ empistemological self = sort of object which can be observed and described eg. i am friendly. I/ ontological self = mysterious entity that does the observing and describing eg. describing deep down how you feel inside about knowing you are friendly. Individualistic cultures regard the self as having independent and separate existence while collectivist cultures view it as embedded in a larger social context of obligations and relationships. Different cultures think of people in different ways eg. americans answer using traits and indians don"t as often do this. But indians still describe with traits (some) so idea of individual traits is not foreign to them. Western self is relatively separate entity while eastern self is more integrated into the social and cultural context. Indv. positive self-regard may be felt less by member of collectivist culture.
