Everything currently or potentially available to consciousness. Each of us lives in and experiences a slightly version of reality. The set of sensations, cognitions, emotions, memories, etc. Each of us exist in a separate and unique world consisting of all the things we are or could be aware of. Not just externally - but also internally (i. e. how we are feeling) Rogers believed only things which are in the phenomenal eld are part of the information that leads to personal growth. For rogers, we have only one motive; the actualizing tendency (our innate need to fully realize all of our potentials) We are directed toward this goal by the organismic valuing process which leads toward ful lling experiences and away from those that are inconsistent with the actualizing tendency. Rogers was trained in psychoanalytic, and he believed that there was a single overriding instinct (just like. Freud"s being sexuality) although rogers" was the actualizing tendency.
